Selphyl / PRFM (Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix)

What is Selphyl®?

The Selphyl® System is designed for the safe and rapid preparation of Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) from a small sample of blood at the patient point of care. Many PRP systems require operator skill, have varying results and have extensive contamination with red blood cells and white blood cells. Selphyl® removes virtually all contaminating cells and is independent of operator technique. PRP is converted to PRFM through a controlled process, creating a scaffold that serves to protect and preserve platelets. Think of Selphyl® PRFM as the next generation PRP.

Selphyl® is ideal for those patients seeking overall enhancement, or improvement of problem areas such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Under eye hollows
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Crepey skin (under eyes, cheeks, neck, hands, decolletage)
  • Lines around the mouth
  • Lip lines (smoker’s lines)
  • Lines on the cheeks
  • Acne scarring
  • Post-operative scarring
  • Selphyl® is a non-surgical treatment that may be used alone, or in combination with other treatments including: Botox®, dermal fillers, chemical peels, or laser treatments.

What can I expect from a Selphyl® treatment visit?

Selphyl® treatment takes less than 30 minutes. First, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm and spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. The platelets are then mixed with a matrix, and injected just under the skin into those areas requiring correction or enhancement. The injection at our facility is often done using the DERMAPEN which allows the growth facors to penetrate into the skin but also combines the additive effect of microneedling.
Are there any side effects to Selphyl®?

Selphyl® treatment is very well-tolerated by most patients. There may be some temporary discomfort during the injections, however topical numbing cream is used to minimize this. Mild swelling may also occur after the treatment, and this generally resolves within a few days.
Since Selphyl® is an injectable treatment, there is also potential for bruising in the managed areas. For this reason, we recommend scheduling the treatment at least two weeks before any major social engagement. Supplementing with arnica may also minimize the chance of bruising.

What results can I expect from Selphyl®?

Since Selphyl® promotes new cell growth and collagen formation, results are gradual and progressive – occurring over a period of 6-8 weeks. During this time patients will see an increase in skin fullness, smoother lines, and ultimately,younger-looking skin. Selphyl® gently blends with the surrounding tissues, making its effects very natural.
The number of treatments needed depends on each patient, however, we generally recommend a series of 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results. Results may last 18-24 months, after which maintenance treatment may be required.

Is Selphyl® the same thing as the “Vampire Facelift®”?

In the media, the term “Vampire Facelift®” has become synonymous with all cosmetic PRP treatments, including Selphyl®, since they utilize a patient’s blood sample. The Vampire Facelift® Procedure™ is actually a trade-marked treatment that combines PRP with traditional dermal fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane®.
